Ezekiel’s vision of a valley of bones in 37:1–14 is one of the book’s best known passages, perhaps most widely recognized as the inspiration for the African-American spiritual “Dem Bones.” The vision holds a special place in the unfolding renewal of elements of Israel’s life for a new future being depicted in chs 34–37 as it reports the first words that the reader has heard from the exiles (v 11) since the beginning of Ezekiel’s proclamations of restoration.
